Video - Second Life pioneer Philip Rosedale on his new startup High Fidelity
The virtual reality industry will be a multi-billion market by 2020
Neal Stephenson depicted the Metaverse in his 1992 novel "Snow Crash", and Philip Rosedale built it with Second Life, in a "primitive" virtual reality environment. The virtual world created by his former company Linden Lab was his first-generation attempt.
Now Rosedale is at his second-generation attempt to build the Metaverse with his VR startup High Fidelity, founded in 2013. Experts think that the virtual reality industry will be a $30 billion market by 2020.
"Virtual reality is the next disruptor for society, after the smartphone and after the Internet," recently said Rosedale. It will enable a global village for communication with a billion other people in the world, with applications expanding far beyond entertainment and gaming.
