What's wrong with people in old pictures?

Early portraits from the 19th and early 20th century looked pretty grim. People never smiled. Never. Only doom and gloom all over. Well, it was only a matter of limited technology, and the time required to capture a scene. Exposure times in those days were looong... and it's easier to hold a serious expression over a long period isn't it? Also, there were more paintings that photos around in those times, so early photography was being heavily influenced by paintings... which meant no smiles! Seriousnesssss...
