Programming: scaling Virtual Worlds like Eve Online and Second Life

Strange virtual worlds tales from a decade spent working as a software engineer on Second Life and Eve Online. Jim "Babbage Linden" Purbrick recently gave a very interesting presentation to Facebook developers, on scaling single-sharded virtual worlds. Jim (now at Facebook) explains how he helped scale Second Life, and went on to do the same with Eve Online. Quite interestingly, Eve Online appears to be slightly less active than Second Life at the moment, judging by concurrency rates. This is a recording of the talk given to the Oculus team at Facebook London, at a tech talk on April 14th, 2016.
