When? NEVER do that! Well, sometimes it's ok. But no, don't do that!

People are hanged, clothes are hung. And you lie down on the sofa (no direct object), but you lay the book down on the table... so the body was lying there, not laying there. And those were "three torturous hours" not "three tortuous hours." Ok, please, stop doing that. Why anytime anyone says anything grammatically incorrect you have to correct them?! I can't care less! ... I mean, correct "him or her", not "them" (anyone is singular.) Oh, and it's "couldn't care less", of course. I'm so sorry.
